The Spring Cup will generally happen in April each year at a date to be agreed and will be the first main club competition in the summer calendar – Playing for the “Spring Cup” sponsored by BathAquaGlass.
As the first competition in the summer it will be a “warm up” for many, and a good chance for novices to play their first competitive event. The format will, therefore, depend on the number of entrants and the number of pistes available. The aim is a doubles competition but depending on numbers, this may end up as a triples competition or a combination of the two.
For this reason, the competition will be seeded – those that are more experienced (ME) and those that are less experienced (LE). Those who play in the Brunel League will be top seeds along with those in the first division of the Thursday Night League (ME) (with the finishing position of the team from the previous year taken into account if need be). The number of seeds depends on the number of entries to keep an even balance.
If there are 24 or fewer then it will be a doubles competition with an ME and a LE in each pair. If there are 36 then it will be a triples competition with an ME, an LE and an intermediate player in each triple. If between 24 and 36 entrants, then it will be a combination of triples and doubles playing one another, with the team using the relevant number of boules when playing (i.e. doubles 3 each and triples 2 each). In this situation the triple will have the LE.
The format will be four matches to thirteen against other teams in accordance with the draw. The game point score in each game (i.e. up to 13) will be that team’s score in that round. The two teams with the most combined points in the four games will play in the final. In the case of a draw, lower points against will count and if still equal, then a two-end play off will be held with the winner going through.
The winners of the final will receive a very handsome trophy donated by our sponsors, BathAquaGlass, and presented at the awards evening later in the year.
A draw based on team letters (i.e. A, B, C etc) will be done before the day. At 10.45 on the day names will be drawn for each team letter. One from ME pot, one from LE and if necessary one from intermediate pot. If required, the triples will be drawn first.
Normal EPA rules will apply to the games playing on a ‘closed piste’ basis i.e. between the lines. Every effort will be made to rotate the pistes that are played on, so that everybody has a fair opportunity. Experience has shown that this intention is often disrupted by late withdrawals on the day or late arrivals, so the organisers may need to vary these arrangements to suit. They may also need to be varied to suit weather or piste conditions on the day.
